Proa Music Society eyes fundraising concert in March
The Proa Music Society, the only chartered music club of the Northern Marianas College with about 40 members, will be staging a fundraising concert in March next year.
Called the “Eclectic Mini-Concert,” the show will feature a repertoire of island reggae, rock, and jazz songs to showcase the musical range of the group formed in September 2010, according to its president, Amber Mendiola.
Mendiola said that their March performance is a follow-up to their show at the Hopwood Jr. High School around Christmas last year.
“We aim to raise about $10,000. Proceeds of the concert will be used to purchase instruments and sound system for the group so we can do more performances in the future,” Mendiola told Saipan Tribune, adding that the group is looking forward to doing shows annually.
Mendiola said that they are still scouting for venues where the audience can watch them perform while enjoying refreshments. The final venue will be announced at a later date.
Mendiola is optimistic that the show will push through and would attract a better turnout than last year, which had about 150 spectators.
Last Dec. 21, the group performed rollicking versions of Christmas hits such as Feliz Navidad, Jingle Bell Rock, and Last Christmas for clients at the Aging Center.
Mendiola urged the community to support their group by watching next year’s concert. For more information, call NMC at 234-3690 Ext. 1253 or 1007.
