HAGÅTÑA, Guam—As part of the series of suicide prevention efforts on Guam, a new round of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is scheduled to take place on Dec. 20 and 21 at the Westin Hotel, from 8am to 5pm.

DMHSA Prevention and Training Branch (PEACE office) is now accepting registration from individuals interested in joining the training.

ASIST is a two-day workshop locally coordinated by the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse-Prevention and Training Branch staff along with other certified ASIST trainers in the community. Participants can expect to learn the application of “suicide first aid”—how to be ready, willing and able to help prevent the immediate risks of suicide.

Individuals age 16 years or older are eligible to register and join. Average cost for materials and logistical needs for attending ASIST is $838.

However, training fee is completely waived through the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial (GLSM) youth suicide prevention grant awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse (DMHSA).

For information on registration and other local suicide prevention efforts, contact the DMHSA Prevention and Training Branch (PEACE office) at 671-477-9079 ~ 83. (PR)
