Salvation Army to kick off fundraising activity
‘Tis the season for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle.
The international faith-based organization is set to kick off its annual fundraising activity on Nov. 25 and will wrap up on Dec. 24 or Christmas Eve.
Established in 1891 by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco, the Christmas Kettle program—widely known as the Red Kettle—involves kettle ringers ringing bells throughout the holiday season to solicit spare change from holiday shoppers.
Salvation Army ministry leader Wayne Gillespie said their kettle ringers will greet shoppers with “Happy holidays” through Dec. 3, after which they will be greeting them with “Merry Christmas.”
“Our primary kettle site will be Joeten Superstore and our Kettle Ringers will also have food boxes beside their kettles for those who wish to donate non-perishable food,” said Gillespie.
Gillespie said they will also conduct the Angel Tree program, an important part of their annual toy drive wherein local stores, banks, and other establishments are invited to set up and decorate Christmas trees and ask customers to donate Christmas gifts for the less fortunate by placing their gifts under the Angel Tree.
He said Bank of Hawaii has agreed once again to become an Angel Tree sponsor. He is inviting churches, schools, and other interested groups to also sign up as an Angel Tree sponsor and help with the food and toy drives.
“The Salvation Army is always in need of food donations, in order to supply our food assistance programs and the food drives conducted during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are important because they shore up dwindling supplies,” said Gillespie.
