NMI post office seeing hike in package mail
The U.S. Postal Service in the CNMI has seen an increase in the number of packages, according to Asia-Pacific international relations global business director Leo B. Tudela.
“There’s about 8 to 9 percent growth in parcels coming to this part of the world, which is good,” Tudela said in an interview last week.
Tudela and other USPS officials from the Pacific region, vendors, and suppliers were on island for the annual Christmas operations meeting held Thursday at the Chamolinian Room of Hyatt Regency Saipan.
According to Tudela, Saipan receives almost 6,000 mails daily. “You have to understand that most of the mails received are priority mail packages—85 percent are packages,” he said.
Tudela said they anticipate that the volume of mail will “maybe double” this holiday season.
The director noted that heavy rains during last year’s holiday season proved to be the biggest challenge for the U.S. Postal Service in the Pacific Region, causing them to deliver wet mail to their customers.
“We’re going to appoint a wet mail coordinator to make sure that it’s done properly and the mail doesn’t get wet,” he said.
Tudela said the meeting, held annually on a different island, provides a venue to discuss the challenges they encounter the previous year and “correct” or “prevent” any mistakes to ensure the timely processing and delivery of mails this holiday.
“By working jointly together, we can look at issues and concerns we had in the past and try to correct that. Hopefully this Christmas, everything works smoothly, everything [goes] well, and hopefully there’ll be no customer complaints,” he added.
At the meeting, new Saipan postmaster Amy Marshall was sworn in by USPS Honolulu district manager Frank Santos.
