GUAM—Members of the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Spouses participated in the annual Octoberfest at Merizo Martyrs Memorial Elementary School on Oct. 31, 2011. Twenty-three Coast Guard volunteers took part in the action; manning booths for face painting, coconut bowling and other carnival type activities.

The event was well-attended by students and parents alike. Despite a couple of rain showers during the day, there was no evidence of dampened enthusiasm among the students, who cheered when it was announced that school would be in session the following day.

The Coast Guard has a special relationship with the village of Merizo, which dates back to World War II, when local residents sheltered Coast Guardsmen from Japanese forces taking possession of the island. [I](USCG)
