Taitano upsets Kaliga in Sunday 8-ball
Patrick Taitano charged back through the loser’s bracket to grab the championship of 19th Hole’s Sunday 8-Ball Tournament from Nolas Kaliga.
Taitano overcame a first round loss to John Mongami by putting away perennial champion Patrick Cepeda and smooth-stroking past Norman Tenorio. He finished his comeback by eliminating Mongami in the loser’s bracket final.
Cepeda took his first loss from Taylor Watanabe, while Tenorio and Mongami fell to Kaliga.
Taitano needed to win two games to get past Kaliga, his Shark Attack teammate in the Saipan Billiards Association’s 8-Ball League. He got them both, running his streak to five straight wins facing elimination.
The Sunday tournament entry fee is $5. There’s a free beer for the first four players to sign up before the scheduled 5pm starting time. First and second place winners split the pot and trophies go to first to third place winners.
Round-robin action continues Friday through Sunday to earn points for the Nov. 23 Marianas Turkey Shoot. The entry fee is $15 until Nov. 22 and $20 the day of the tournament. Players can start paying their partial entry fees to Rose or Ken Phillips, now until Nov. 22. Frozen turkey, cash to first, second, third, and trophies for first to fifth place winners are at stake.
The contests are held at 19th Hole, located in Lower Navy Hill. Coming from Garapan, it is just before you get to the Bank of Hawaii traffic light, past Grand Market and before Jane’s Barbecue.
