15 schools will vie for best decorated Christmas tree
Fifteen public and private elementary schools will be competing for the grand prize in the 6th Christmas Tree Decorating Contest.
Sonia Siwa of non-profit group PDM Promoters, Inc., which organizes the annual event, said five more schools signed up before the contest registration closed yesterday.
They are Brilliant Star Montessori, Tanapag Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, Oleai Elementary School, and Agape Christian School.
“We’re very pleased that we have 15 participating schools this year, which is the same number as last year,” Siwa told Saipan Tribune.
The annual competition, held regularly at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan, aims to promote recycling among elementary students.
Siwa said each school will decorate a 9-foot tall Christmas tree using recycled materials such as empty soda cans, water bottles, and used paper.
Decoration date is on Nov. 30.
Decorated Christmas trees will be judged based on the use of old or used materials, relevance to the holiday theme, attractiveness, creativity and design, and durability.
Siwa said all entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges at the program that will coincide with the Thursday Street Market at the Paseo de Marianas on Dec. 1.
During the event, Siwa said they will also light up the giant Christmas Tree in the middle of Paseo.
Participating schools will have a chance to win up to $5,000 worth of educational tax credits. For more information, call 234-6900.
