Guerrero takes RGA Nov. Ace; Saures tops Dec. qualifier
Nick Guerrero and Joe Saures split the honors in Refaluwasch Golf Association’s two-in-one tournament last Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links.
Guerrero claimed the November Ace award, while Saures ruled the December Ace qualifier. The two golfers had similar net scores of 78 in last weekend’s tournament, which doubled as the November Ace event and December qualifier. To break the tie and determine the Ace winner, RGA went to the scorecards on the front nine.
Guerrero shot a 47 on the front and deducting half of his 19 handicap, he ended up with a net 37.5 against Saures’ 41. The 10-handicapper Saures carded a gross 46 in the first nine holes to drop to second place after the tiebreaker. However, Saures now holds the score to beat in the December Ace and if no RGA member scores better than 78 on Nov. 20, he gets to keep the monthly plum and take the last slot to the club championship.
Actually, Saures and Guerrero’s 78s were not the top scores in the weekend event. Ray Tigilau recorded the lowest net at 69, but he had already won a monthly Ace and was disqualified from bringing home another award.
Joe Demapan fired the second best net at 73, but he is not eligible for the RGA Cup, as last Sunday’s tournament was only his third of the season. RGA requires Ace winners to join at least six tournaments to earn tickets to the club championship. Tars Olopai, who submitted the third best net at 75 and had closest to the pin shots on hole Nos. 8 and 15, was also disqualified after having won the October Ace.
Seven other RGA members joined the weekend competition. The list includes Dwayne Stephens (81), Tony Rogolifoi (80), Tom Tebuteb (88), Joe Wabol (89), Manny Mangarero (82), L.J. Camacho (77), and Jess Wabol (83).
Meanwhile, the December Ace tournament will also be held at Kingfisher next Sunday, while the RGA Club Championship and Family Fun Day will take place on Dec. 11 and 18, respectively, at Coral Ocean Point.
