Non-profit group PDM Promoters, Inc. is looking for more schools to fill in the available slots for the 6th Christmas Tree Decorating Contest.

Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters said that 10 schools have so far signed up for the annual contest, which promotes recycling among elementary students in the CNMI.

Last year’s grand prize winner, Golden Harvest International School, will be joined this year by Green Meadow School, Joshua Generation International Academy, Saipan Seventh-Day Adventist School, and the Koblerville, William S. Reyes, Dandan, Garapan, Kagman, and San Antonio elementary schools.

“We’re expecting to have at least 15 schools to participate in this year’s contest, which is the same number we had last year,” Siwa told Saipan Tribune.

Deadline for registration is next Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Siwa said each school will decorate on Nov. 30 a 9-foot tall Christmas tree at the Paseo de Marianas using recycled materials such as empty soda cans, water bottles, and used paper.

Decorated Christmas trees will be judged based on the use of old or used materials, relevance to the theme, attractiveness, creativity and design, and durability.

Siwa said entries will be judged on Dec. 1 at the Paseo de Marianas, coinciding with the Thursday Street Market.

“During the program, we will also light up the giant Christmas Tree in the middle of Paseo de Marianas,” she added.

Winning entries will win up to $5,000 worth of educational tax credits.
