The CNMI will be sending two swimmers to the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2011 in Tokyo, Japan, next month.

Northern Marianas Swimming Federation president John Hirsh said they selected Tsunami Saipan’s Kensuke Kimura and Shigeki Tenorio to represent the Commonwealth in the FINA World Cup that will run from Nov. 12 to 13 at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center.

The tournament in Tokyo is the last stop in the seven-leg World Cup series that started in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Oct. 7 and 8. The second leg took place in Stockholm, Sweden (Oct. 15 to 16), third in Moscow, Russia (Oct. 18 to 19), and fourth in Berlin, Germany (Oct. 22 to 23). The fifth leg is scheduled in Singapore (Nov. 4 to 5), while the penultimate will be held in Beijing, China (Nov. 8 to 9). Points are awarded in each leg based on how swimmers finished in every event and at the end of the seven-leg series, rankings will be made both in the men’s and women’s divisions. Double points are at stake in the seventh and last leg.

Cash prizes await the top-ranking swimmers in the men’s and women’s categories and the world record holders. The No. 1 ranked swimmer will receive $100,000 (each for men’s and women’s), $50,000 to second, and $30,000 to third. For each event, the winner gets $1,500, $1,000 for runner-up, and $500 for third. FINA pays $10,000 for a world record.

The CNMI will only be competing in one leg and Kensuke Kimura and Tenorio will be leaving for Japan on Nov. 11 with Tsunami Saipan coach Hiro Kimura accompanying them in the two-day competition. Kimura has yet to inform Saipan Tribune the events his two swimmers are entered in.

The two Tsunami Saipan swimmers warmed up for the FINA World Cup on Oct. 15 when they participated in the 18th SSC All Schools Swimming Championships at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

Kensuke and Tenorio swam for Grace Christian Academy and gave the Eagles the first place finish in the high school division against Saipan Southern High School and Marianas High School. Kensuke won in the 14-and-above 200m freestyle race and 100m backstroke and joined GCA’s 200m medley relay team. Tenorio prevailed in the 200m individual medley and 100m breaststroke events.
