Katelyn Alpino, last school year’s Rota High School valedictorian, has appealed to the CNMI Scholarship Office board for a recalculation of her grades in the hopes that she can be granted financial assistance this semester.

Alpino’s appeal was received by the board early this month and was immediately acknowledged and granted, according to scholarship administrator Jackie Che.

“The board acknowledged and granted Ms. Alpino’s appeal letter asking [for a] recalculation of her grade. The board is currently working with the Public School System on that matter,” said Che Tuesday, refusing to disclose more information pending the board’s decision.

Although the process may be a bit slow, she assured that the board is acting on the matter. “It’s slowly going…but it’s moving forward,” she said.

Che could not say as to when the board will come up with a decision.

Alpino is enrolled in a pre-medicine course at Philadelphia University. She was denied the Honor Scholarship awards this semester after getting a lower grade, based on the Scholarship Office calculation. Alpino’s two other classmates—the class salutatorian and the third honor student—both got higher GPAs than Alpino, based on the Scholarship Office’s calculation.
