Champions crowned
The UFO Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League 2011 Bud Cup and U19 division of the Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League concluded last week with MAFEA/Ali’i Konflikt and the Sonics winning the championships.
Ali’i Konflikt stunned regular season champion Namfrel Proa in the Bud Cup finals, 94-80, while the Sonics triumphed over Rollers Basketball Club’s Fast 12 in the Rotary U19 title match, 72-65, at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.
The Sonics and Ali’i Konflikt were awarded with championship trophies also last week, while the top individual performers in the leagues were recognized too.
NMASA and the TSL Foundation also held a recognition ceremony, handing awards to student-athletes who had impressive showings the past months. Tennis’ Christian Miller, Tammy Ackerman, Rafael Jones, and Mikayla Lopez received medals for ruling on and off-island tournaments, while baseball’s Ian Rogolifoi, Joshua Jones, and Vince Cepeda got the same hardware for helping the CNMI win the gold medal in last month’s 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia. Jehn Joyner of football and spearfishing’s David Lizama were also cited for their outstanding performance, but failed to attend the ceremony.
Meanwhile, other notable events last week were the selection of the Saipan Little League Baseball Inc. board of directors, opening of the MDX caging, RBC Family Fun Tournament and the ongoing NMIFA and SML youth league.
The SLLBI board of directors for the 2012 season is composed of Roman Reyes, Robert Magofna, Yvonne Tarope Camacho, James Mawata, Remedio Celis, Juan I. Tenorio, Rep. Ray Yumul, Peding Tenorio, and Annie Flores.
MDX caging had 15 teams during the opening ceremony with JHEM’s Garapan winning the first match against G.E.C. Koblerville.
The RBC Family Fun Tournament drew 80 participants, including the parents of RBC players and proceeds of the event will be used for the club’s participation to a Thanksgiving competition in Guam.
In the NMIFA youth league, Matansa and MP United 1 kept their undefeated records in the girls and boys U15 divisions, while in the SML youth summer/fall league, Fielders 1 and Titanum posted contrasting wins.
