Senator wants pay hike freeze lifted for cops

Most CNMI police officers are paid $16,000 to $18,000 a year, while police patrol officers in the United States earn a median salary of $51,000 a year or from $30,000 to $100,000 depending on skills and other factors, said Sen. Jovita Taimanao (Ind-Rota).

Because of the disparity in wages, the peril of being a police officer and the critical role that police officers play in the community, Taimanao is proposing to exempt the Department of Public Safety from the salary increase freeze through her Senate Bill 17-93.

Taimanao said that DPS may not be able to pay its officers the median salary of mainland police officers but it must be given flexibility to adjust the salaries of officers on a case-by-case basis.

The Senate is expected to act on Taimanao’s SB 17-93 on Tuesday, she said last night.
