The Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance program has approved the scholarship applications of 488 students even as it denied assistance to 113.

SHEFA administrator Henry Hofschneider said yesterday that they have already completed reviewing 601 applications and supporting documents out of the total 803 applications they received for the fall 2011 semester, including those submitted online.

Of the 601 reviewed applications, 488 have been notified of their eligibility while 113 received denial letters.

As of yesterday, there are still 202 applications pending review and decision.

Hofschneider said the review is expected to continue next week in time for the submission of the final number of eligible applicants to the board this month.

He projects that 520 applications may be eligible for this semester’s financial awards: grant-in-aid, field of study, and incentive.

To ensure a balanced disbursement of grants, the SHEFA board has capped disbursements at only $1.5 million for each semester term.

Hofschneider said a majority of students who did not qualify failed to meet the required grade point average while others were non-compliant with the required number of credits.

This comes even as SHEFA continues to wait for the disbursement of 293 pending checks at the Department of Finance, totaling to $560,300.

The pending checks cover 261 scholars for the fall 2011 semester amounting to $473,100 and 13 checks for spring 2011 semester scholars amounting to $14,200. Additionally, 18 checks for fall 2010 semester scholars are also pending, amounting to $76,000.
