135 nonresident CHC staff eligible for CW-1
Public Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez disclosed Friday that all 135 nonresident workers at the Commonwealth Health Center have been found qualified for a CW-1 visa.
This was confirmed, he said, by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials with whom the department recently met with to discuss the matter.
Villagomez said the bulk of the nonresident workers at the hospital are nurses.
He said the contracts of a few of the 135 foreign hospital workers will not be renewed this new fiscal year.
“We’re not renewing everybody and this is based on their performance evaluation—a process that is also being conducted for U.S. citizen workers in the hospital. From the 135, about 98 percent have passed the performance evaluation and we would soon be filing CW-1 for each of them,” said Villagomez.
Last week, a memorandum was sent to all foreign workers to inform them about the new CW-1 requirements.
“We tell them exactly what our plans are and told them if they have dependents for CW-2 they have to start working with our human resource office and putting in their applications at the same time,” he said. CW-2 visas are for the immediate families of CW-1 workers.
It was earlier disclosed that the filing for CW-1 status for all foreign workers will cost the department about $120,000, compared to H-IB, visa which may cost up to $585,000.
