Nine students will have the chance to learn more about the Japanese culture through an exchange program between the Saipan Mayor’s Office and the International Youth Association of Japan KSKK.

Executive secretary Vinycia Seman of the Saipan Mayor’s Office said she and staffer James Villagomez will serve as chaperones for the nine students who are between third to 12th graders.

The students are currently enrolled at Garapan Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, Mount Carmel School, Saipan Southern High School, and Tinian Grace Christian Academy.

Seman said the students were able to meet all the requirements, which included having a valid U.S. passport that does not expire within six months while in Japan; paying for a non-refundable ticket fare of $546.06 on Sept. 16; travel insurance; student clearance form filled out and approved by teachers and counselor; and a 2.75 grade point average.

According to Seman, about half of the students will be traveling to Japan for the first time. They will be there from Oct. 6 to 12.

All students and chaperones will be staying with 10 host families residing in Chiba, Ibaraki, and Tokyo cities from Oct. 8 to 10.

“I hope that they will be able to appreciate the Japanese culture more and be open to try new things such as different food and activities that their [host] families prepared for them,” Seman told Saipan Tribune.

Seman said the group will visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatories, Ueno Zoo, Tokyo Disneyland, and the Shinjuku shopping district.
