Diola, Choi advance at Shirley’s Classic
Mario Diola and Hannah Choi maintained their perfect record in the mixed doubles 40-and-above division of the 2011 Shirley’s Badminton Classic after notching two more wins in Week 3 at the TSL Sports Complex.
The duo now has a 5-0 record in the eight-team Pool B for the lead and a spot to the semifinals. Only the Top 2 teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals and Diola and Choi claimed one of the two spots in their group after beating Robert Reyes and Elma Labuson on Friday and downing Victor Regis and Annarose Omori last Sunday.
Reyes and Labuson (4-2) and Regis and Omori (4-2) will battle for the remaining semis ticket in Pool B.
Pool A still has an open race for the two semis berths. Dick Guintu and Oh In Sook have a strong chance of making it to the next round with their flawless 3-0 mark, while Lito Mendoza and Anna Alvarez also hold an unbeaten 2-0 slate. Gigi Zapanta and Jerry Hibi own a 3-1 record, while Gary Bandoja and Kim Boranah and Oh Imbog and Shirley Kim have 2-2 and 1-2 slates, respectively.
In the mixed doubles BB, Bandoja and Sook are likely to get the first semis berth in Pool A with their 6-0 record, while Saul Gargallo and Annette Quiambao are also favored to advance with their 4-0 card. Lito Mendoza and Marylyn Montano are still in the fight, holding similar 4-2 marks.
In Pool B, Oh Imbog and Toshiko Obata and siblings Wowiw Abuel and Lanie Bartolome have 5-0 and 4-0 records, respectively, to boost their playoff chances. Three other pairs are also trying to advance to the next round. The list include Cris Hilario and Annette Ta (3-1) , Diola and Julie Lee (3-2), and Rodwealth Espana and Elna Curate (3-2).
There is a three-way battle for the two semis tickets in Pool A of the mixed doubles CC. With their 5-1 record, Nani and Roma Barlao have a slight advantage over Curate and Luis Camacho (4-0) and Brandon Talania and Wendy Fernandez (4-1).
In Pool B, Joel Ortega and Boranah are likely to march into the semis with their 5-1 card, while Kanata Omori and Cleofe Santos (4-0) and Jerome Malasarte and Chris Obaldo (2-1) will fight for the other semis spot.
