WASHINGTON, D.C.—CNMI Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan invites everyone in the Northern Mariana Islands community to observe a minute of silence in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the tragic loss of life that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, and in memory of the lives lost in the war against terrorists that followed.

“Please join me in observing a moment of silence at 10:46pm Chamorro Standard Time on Sept. 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the minute that terrorists crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center’s North Tower in New York City. This act and the subsequent attack on the South Tower and on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the downing of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, PA, eventually claimed the lives of 2,753 people from 70 different nations, including over 400 first responders in New York.

“Many of us in the Marianas still vividly recall the images of these events, half a world away, as they unfolded before us on our television screens. Whether near or far from the attacks, our lives as Americans were forever changed. We live now constrained by new security cautions. But we live, too, newly inspired by the heroism and dedication of our countrymen, who on that day turned to help each other escape from danger, rushed directly into the inferno to pull strangers to safety, or thwarted the terrorist attackers.

“We live, too, with the continuing pain of loss of 14 of our sons and daughters of the Northern Mariana Islands, young people who answered their country’s call and took up arms against terrorism. In that minute of silence on Sunday, 9/11, let us especially remember their names and the prayer for the welfare of the families they left behind: Army Sgt. Yihjyh ‘Eddie’ L. Chen, Army SSgt. Wilgene T. Lieto, Army SPC Derence W. Jack, Army Sgt. Jesse J. Castro, Marine LCpl Adam Q. Emul, Army SPC Leeroy A. Camacho, Army PFC John D. Flores, Army PFC Victor M. Fontanilla, Army SPC Joe G. Charfauros Jr., Navy Seaman Anamarie SanNicolas Camacho, Army Sgt. Brian S. Leon Guerrero, Army Sgt. Julian F. Manglona, Air Force SrA Audra P.M. Winkfield, and Marine Cpl Dave M. Santos.

“May we never forget those we have lost, or those still risking their lives in service to their country.” (PR)
