CUC fixes damaged pipe in Lower Navy Hill
A seven-man crew of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. worked around the clock Friday and Saturday replace a damaged main water pipe in Lower Navy Hill.
Led by water operations supervisor Tim Scheidt and trades technician Glenn Villagomez, the project was completed late Saturday night, restoring water supply to customers in the area early Sunday.
The team was dispatched immediately after receiving reports of the leak, which was found on the main water line that serves residents of Lower Navy Hill across the Tinian and Rota Guest House.
A backhoe was used to unearth five feet of dirt to expose the 20-foot pipe. Further assessment of the 8-inch pipe also revealed an 18-foot long crack on its side.
According to Villagomez the crack was the result of the pressure of water traveling through the pipes.
“When the water travels through the pipe it causes vibrations. The vibration causes the pipe to rub against the rocks. This constant rubbing, especially if there are small loose rocks underneath the pipe, usually causes the cracks. In this case, there was a huge rock next to the pipe,” said Villagomez.
CUC urge the general public to report any water-, power-, and sewer-related problems as soon as possible so repairs can be performed and service restored. They can report them to the trouble desk at 235-0282 or 235-2282.
