A man armed with a knife tied a 56-year-old male cashier and robbed a poker establishment in Sadog Tasi Monday morning.

Saipan Tribune learned that the suspect took off with an estimated $2,500 to $2,700 cash from Capitol Poker during the robbery at 9am.

A surveillance camera reportedly captured the broad daylight robbery. The establishment’s owner showed the footage to investigators.

The Department of Public Safety has yet to release information about the incident to the media.

The cashier, a Chinese-Korean, told Saipan Tribune last night that the suspect, whom he described as possibly a local, was the lone customer at the time.

The suspect was playing poker when he called the cashier about a problem with the machine.

As the cashier was checking the machine, the suspect suddenly pulled a knife, grabbed him from behind, and pointed it at his neck.

The suspect then dragged the cashier to the cashier’s booth and tied the victim’s hands behind his back before taking the money from the till and fleeing.

Although he was tied up, the cashier said he managed to call his employer, who then called the police.

As of press time, it was not clear whether police have made an arrest.

It was the third armed robbery at Capitol Poker since April 2004.

On April 29, 2004, two men brandishing a gun attempted to rob the poker arcade. The suspects failed to get any money, but one of them shot and injured two of the establishment’s employees.

The two suspects were later arrested and convicted in federal court.

On Good Friday in 2008, a man staged a broad daylight robbery at Capitol Poker. The sister of the poker owner was hurt when the suspect assaulted her in the bathroom.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and convicted in federal court.
