A tropical storm heading northward is expected to intensify into a typhoon today, Saturday, but no watches or warnings are in effect as it is a little bit far from the Marianas region.

According to the National Weather Service in Guam, the center of Tropical Storm Talas as of 1pm yesterday was 580 miles northwest of Saipan, 630 miles north-northwest of Guam, and 250 miles south-southwest of Iwo.

Moving north-northwest at 7 miles per hour, Talas’ maximum sustained winds have increased to 50mph. Its tropical storm winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center.

As of 1pm, NWS said that Talas was expected to resume a northward track with a decrease in forward speed during the next 24 hours.

“Talas is expected to gradually intensify over the next 24 hours and could become a typhoon Saturday,” the weather bureau said.

The storm brought rains to the CNMI yesterday.
