Kagman holds off Rollers 2, 42-41
Kagman overcame a late scare in the final minute of their Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League U19 season debut against Rollers Basketball Club’s Rollers 2, taking the match, 42-41, last Wednesday at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.
The Rollers fought from behind all game and briefly took its first lead of the match, 39-38, with just 40 seconds left in regulation, but Kagman recovered soon after and secured the victory with its full court press.
At the game start, the Rollers’ Rainier DL Guerrero and Louigi Iglesias scored four points apiece as their team managed a slim 10-8 lead in the opening period, but Kagman rallied in the second quarter and jumped in front, 25-19, at halftime.
Kagman’s Michael Manglona and Jimmy Brel teamed up for 12 points in the second quarter comeback.
Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter as Kagman maintained a three-possession margin, 34-28, heading into the final stanza.
Kagman was the smaller team in the matchup, but its speeders actually sniffed out more rebounds than the bigger Rollers squad throughout the game, which in turn allowed them to cash in on a lot of fastbreak opportunities.
Kagman’s Brel led all scorers with 13 points, while Rollers’ DL Guerrero turned in a team-high 12 on the short end.
The Rotary U19 season continues today at the TSL Sports Complex as the unbeaten and defending champion O’Aces look to make it two in a row against Rollers 1 at 5pm followed at 6pm with the Sonics against NMC Proa.
