Newcomer rules SGA July Ace
Danny Quitugua had a winning debut in the Saipan Golfers Association after prevailing in the SGA July Ace held last month at the Kingfisher Golf Links.
Quitugua had a net 67 in his first tournament with SGA for a two-stroke win over Frank Castro, who carded a 69 and made two birdies. The SGA newcomer also won the closest to the pin shot on hole No. 12.
Twenty-six other SGA members joined the July tournament. The list includes Tony I. Deleon Guerrero (69), Martin Sablan (71), Manny Blas (72), Manny C. Sablan (72), Rick Kautz (73), Das Krishnan (73), Art Deleon Guerrero (73), Steve Balakrishna (74) Ray Salas (74), Bob Magofna (75), Frances Sablan (75), Joe Demapan (75) Jung Eun Teack (75), John Babauta (76), Mat Chargualaf (76), John Cruz (76), Edward Sablan (76), Jose I. Sablan (77), Edward Manibusan (78), Larry Hocog (79), Larry Deleon Guerrero (79), Jess Castro (79), Ray San Nicolas (82), Joe Deleon Guerrero (82), Mariano Fajardo (89), and Norbert Sablan (90).
Kautz also had two birdies to duplicate Frank Castro’s feat, while Blas, Manny Sablan, Balakrishna, Teack, Edward Sablan, Jose I. Sablan, Edward Manibusan, and Jess Castro made one apiece.
In the longest drive contest, Kautz won on hole No. 14, while Fajardo prevailed on No. 17.
With his win in last month’s tournament, Quitugua gained a slot in the 2011 SGA Ace of Aces Tournament, joining early qualifiers Tony I. Deleon Guerrero (January), John Cruz (February), Nick C. Sablan (March), Manibusan (April), Ray M. San Nicolas (May), and Joe I. Sablan (June).
