Man gets 9 days for beating up wife after birthday party
A 57-year-old man accused of beating up his wife and trying to stab her with a knife pleaded guilty in the Superior Court as part of a plea deal.
Lucio O. Yasona pleaded guilty to assault and battery and was sentenced to 364 days in prison, all suspended except for the first nine days, with credit for the nine days he had already served in jail. This means he immediately goes free.
Yasona was placed on a one-year probation and required to pay a $100 fine, $25 court assessment fee, and $100 probation fee.
In a written order issued last week, Associate Judge Robert C. Naraja ordered Yasona to perform 100 hours of community service and undergo evaluation at the Community Guidance Center for anger management, alcohol abuse, and any other issues that may be identified by the counselor.
The Office of the Attorney General had charged Yasona with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of disturbing the peace. In exchange for pleading guilty to assault and battery, the OAG dismissed the remaining charges.
The case stemmed from a July 17, 2010, incident on Saipan, when Yasona allegedly grabbed his wife by the collar of her shirt, attempted to stab her with a knife, and punched her on the chin.
