A bill raising the salary of the Division of Revenue and Taxation director from up to $42,000 to a maximum of $50,000 now heads to the governor.

Senators accepted the House’s amendment to Senate Vice President Jude Hofschneider’s (R-Tinian) Senate Bill 17-51.

That House amendment caps the salary of the Department of Finance’s other unclassified division chiefs and special assistants at $40,800. The exemption is Finance’s Revenue and Taxation director who will receive a salary of not more than $50,000.

Senators and House members have agreed that the low salary has been turning off potential Rev& Tax directors. The position has remained vacant since 2008.

They also said the lack of a director has been affecting the enforcement of poker regulations and delays in the release of tax refunds and rebates.
