Navy, Guam Shipyard work on lease for a ship repair facility

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced Friday that the U.S. Navy will begin exclusive negotiations with Guam Industrial Services Inc. (Guam Shipyard) on the terms of a 40-year long-term lease for performing ship repair, overhaul, and maintenance of vessels in Guam. The Guam Shipyard was the lone bidder for the lease contract.
“I am extremely encouraged that the Navy will enter into exclusive negotiations with the Guam Shipyard on a long-term lease for the former Ship Repair Facility, Guam,” said Bordallo. “The announcement demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to maintaining this critical ship repair capability and local workforce on Guam. I appreciate the efforts of Under Secretary Work and Assistant Secretary Pfannenstiel in working to ensure that the Navy’s recent Request for Proposal for the lease and maintenance of the ship repair facility at the Naval Base took into consideration our community’s concerns. This long-term lease will enable Guam Shipyard to make necessary investments in its facilities, thereby ensuring it can meet the growing requirements of the Navy, MSC, Coast Guard and other customers in the Western Pacific.
