Saipan is now a better place for pedestrians, thanks to the retrofitting of existing crosswalks by the Energy Division under the Department of Public Works.

Deputy director Vince Attao said yesterday that the project involves the installation of solar-powered LED lights for the crosswalks.

“Three of these crosswalks are now operational. Installation began in the last few weeks,” he told Saipan Tribune.

These crosswalks are located next to 99 Cents store in Garapan along Middle Road, in front of Saipan Grand Hotel in Susupe, and by the Gilbert Ada Gymnasium in Oleai.

The project, Attao said, also involves the retrofitting of existing school zone flashers in several sites on island.

“The school zone flashers are currently being set up and installed at certain locations as we speak,” he added.

According to Attao, the retrofitting project also includes Rota and Tinian.

“This project is very important as far as ensuring the safety of pedestrians, especially schoolchildren,” said Attao. “Additionally, the CNMI government will realize some savings on energy because of the solar power and LED lighting.”

DPW Secretary Martin Sablan echoed this, saying the project “will address safety concerns” of pedestrians since these crosswalks are placed strategically at schools and major intersections.

Attao said total project cost, which is funded through ARRA monies, amounts to $196,260.

“We’re hoping to get all these things up and running before the next school year starts,” he said. “We’re continuing our efforts to provide more energy-efficient measures through certain projects. We have projects right now that are ongoing, as far as energy efficiency is concerned. It’s just a matter of completing the[m].”
