3 Saipan beach sites red-flagged
The Division of Environment Quality has red-flagged the Hafadai Beach Hotel beach, Garapan Beach and Saipan World Resort Beach and is advising the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
DEQ said that samples collected from these locations had excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci) that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.
Water samples were taken from 12 locations on Saipan this week.
The DEQ did not analyze water samples from the following locations this week so residents are urged to take caution when visiting these areas: Wing Beach, Palms Resort, San Roque School Beach, Plumeria Hotel, Tanapag Meeting Hall, Central Repair Shop, Sea Plane Ramp, DPW Channel Bridge, South Puerto Rico Dump, Outer Cove Marina, Smiling Cove Marina, north of American Memorial Park, Fiesta drainage, Samoa Housing, south of Hafaadai drainage, Garapan Fishing Dock, Garapan Beach drainage, Saipan Community School beach, Sugar Dock, CK Dist. No. 2 drainage, Hopwood School Beach, San Antonio Beach, and San Antonio Lift Station.
