Hocog is students’ rep on Education Board
Acting governor Eloy Inos appointed Mary M. Hocog yesterday as the new students’ representative on the Board of Education, replacing Joycelynn Atalig from Rota.
Hocog is a senior student at Tinian High School and is currently off-island, according to his principal, Julian Hofschneider, yesterday.
Her term is effective immediately and will run through the duration of her enrollment in public school.
“The Board of Education plays a vital role in ensuring the best education possible for our students. I am confident that you will make a valuable contribution, and we appreciate your willingness to serve and provide input from a student’s point of view,” said Inos in his transmittal letter to the board.
Hocog will serve as a non-voting member of the board. The position does not require the advice and consent of the Senate.
Inos made the appointment at the recommendation of Education Commissioner Rita Sablan and board members.
Board chair Marylou Ada said yesterday that she expects Hocog to actively participate in board meetings and activities.
Sablan welcomed Hocog’s appointment and vowed to work with her in promoting collaboration and teamwork among youth and school organizations on three islands.
Saipan Tribune learned that Hocog is a consistent honor student. She is an active member or officer of various academic and youth groups and has participated in several academic competitions here and off-island. In 2009, Hocog participated in the JROTC Leadership Symposium/Academic Bowl held at the George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Four cadets, including Hocog, competed against 300 cadets from all over the nation in an academic challenge bowl. From 2006 through 2010, Hocog was a consistent participant in the annual Chamorro language competition in Guam and had received numerous awards.
