A tropical depression has developed east of the Marianas and was predicted to become a typhoon last night, possibly bringing damaging winds to the northern islands later this week.

The National Weather Service in Guam advised residents of Agrihan, Pagan, and Alamagan yesterday to closely monitor the progress of Tropical Depression 08W that had maximum sustained winds at 35 miles per hour.

NMS said a deviation to the left of the current forecast track could still bring damaging winds to the northern islands later this week.

Acting governor Eloy S. Inos said that, although no watches or warning are in effect, residents of Pagan and Alamagan should closely monitor the progress of Tropical Depression 08W.

At 7am, the center of Tropical Depression O8W was located about 610 miles east of Pagan and Alamagan, 615 miles east of Agrihan, 675 miles east-northeast of Saipan, and 785 miles east-northeast of Guam.

NWS said the tropical depression has been drifting west-northwest at 12 mph and that this motion is expected to continue through today, Wednesday.

At 1am yesterday, the tropical depression’s center was 735 miles east of Agrihan, Pagan, and Alamagan.

The NWS forecast is that the tropical depression may be centered 250 miles north of Agrihan by Thursday night as a minimal typhoon.

“While damaging winds are expected to remain well to the north of the islands, periods of heavy rain, gusty southwest winds and hazardous surf are possible Thursday through Friday,” NWS said.
