The kick off date for the 2011 UFO Basketball Friendship League has been pushed back from July 10 to July 31.

League chair and United Filipino Organization president Bong Malasarte said they have to delay the opening of the competition for three more weeks due to the unavailability of team uniforms and the TSL Sports Complex. Participating teams have yet to complete their respective uniforms, while the TSL Sports Complex will host the 2011 BANMI Women’s Summer Basketball League until the end of this month.

Though it changed the league’s opening date, UFO has stuck with the deadline for submission of rosters and entrance fee. Teams must turn over a copy of their 12-player lineup and $750 on or before July 8.

This Friday will also serve as a technical meeting and players and coaches of each team are required to be at the Civic Center pavilion at 6pm. UFO will entertain questions and other concerns about the league during the technical meeting.

So far, this year’s UFO caging has attracted 21 teams. The masters division (40 and above) has lured six teams and two more squads will be accepted, while the junior category (21 to 39) has 12 teams and registration is already close. The midget division (15 to 20) has three teams and UFO will accommodate three more squads. Team names will only be announced once all squads turn over the needed requirements.

The three divisions are open to all nationalities, as UFO had already waived the Filipino-only eligibility rule. However players will still be screened on July 15 at 6pm at Civic Center before they are allowed to play league. Players must bring proof of age eligibility (drivers licensed, passport or birth certificate) and sign waiver forms.

Then on July 29, team managers, coaches, table officials, referees, and UFO officials are required to attend a final meeting at 6pm at the Civic Center to discuss details about the league’s opening day.

Games in the UFO caging are initially scheduled every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
