Jose Sablan and Ray San Nicolas secured tickets to the Saipan Golfers Association’s club championship after winning the group’s last two monthly tournaments in separate venues.

Over at Coral Ocean Point on May 22, San Nicolas bested 17 other SGA members to win the May Ace. Then last Saturday at the Marianas Country Club, Sablan defeated 22 golfers to top the June Ace tournament. Both golfers now qualify for the SGA Ace of Aces, which will be played at the end of the year and will feature the 12 monthly winners of the season.

San Nicolas ruled the May tournament after carding a net 68. The 14-handicapper shot a 40 and 42 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 82. He won by five strokes against Das Krishnan and Tony Deleon Guerrero, who carded identical net scores of 73. Krishnan won the scorecard tiebreak to take the second place, while Deleon Guerrero settled for third.

In the longest drive contests, Steve Balakrishna prevailed on the par-4 No. 6, while Mariano Fajardo topped the par-5 No. 18. Balakrishna also won in the most birdies competition with two, as six others had only one each. In the closest to the pin competitions on par-3 holes, Manny Sablan reigned on No. 3, Deleon Guerrero on No. 7, Rick Kautz on No. 12, and Krishnan on No. 14.

In the June Ace tournament, Jose Sablan had a two-stroke lead over Krishnan, as the former fired a net 70 against the latter’s 72. Frank Castro completed the Top 3 with his net 74 and edged John Cruz in the scorecard tiebreak.

A 48 on the front and 43 on the back gave the 21-handicapper Jose Sablan a gross 91. Krishnan also had a 21 handicap and tallied 48 on the front, but his 45 on the back dropped him to another runner-up finish.

In other side events in last month’s tournament, Ed Manibusan and Martin Sablan had longest drives on No. 2 and No. 11, respectively. Manibusan also won in the closest to the pin contest on No. 6, Kautz on No. 8. Frank Castro on No. 12, and Nick Sablan on No. 16. Sablan had the most birdies with three, while Deleon Guerrero and Jess Castro had two each.
