WASHINGTON, D.C.—Guam Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo issued yesterday the following statement following President Barack Obama’s address outlining his plan to reduce U.S. forces in Afghanistan:

“Our nation’s effort to combat terrorism in the Afghan region has been a long and costly mission,” said Bordallo. “Several of our island’s sons and daughters have sacrificed much, and we must always remember those who paid the ultimate price in defense of our freedom.  There is a strong sentiment in Congress that it is time to begin a transition for the Afghan people to take control of their country’s security.  While there remain questions on the pace of the drawdown, I believe the President has made a solid proposal, and we will examine all the details when they become available.  The President’s plan gives enough flexibility to adjust the schedule of the drawdown should conditions on the ground warrant it next summer.  Otherwise it is time for our nation to signal the Afghan people that there will not be an indefinite deployment of American troops in their country.  As the President mentioned, the primary purpose of defeating Al Qaeda has essentially been accomplished, and it is now up to Afghanistan to ensure its own security.”
