Lawmakers also testifying in DC on federalization matters
At least two lawmakers—one from the House and the Senate—could testify in Washington, D.C. on July 14 during a congressional oversight hearing on the implementation of the federalization law and a bill giving “CNMI-only resident status” for four specific groups of people.
House Speaker Eli Cabrera (R-Saipan) said he is likely to send Rep. Fred Deleon Guerrero (Ind-Saipan), chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Federal Relations.
Deleon Guerrero, who also testified at a similar hearing in the nation’s capital last year, said he will be glad to represent the CNMI House of Representatives at the oversight hearing on the implementation of U.S. Public Law 110-229 and Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan’s H.R. 1466.
“The bigger issue here is the implementation of the federalization law. I also hope that the worker regulations will be released by that time,” he said.
Senate President Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota), in a separate interview, said whether or not the Senate sends a representative to Washington, D.C., they will submit a written testimony.
Rep. John Fleming (R-LA), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs, sent out invitations to select individuals, including Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, to hear their views on the implementation of PL 110-229 and the need for H.R. 1466.
Fitial plans to attend the hearing to testify on behalf of the CNMI government.
