Gargallo, Bandoja keep clean record

Saul Gargallo and Gary Bandoja are still undefeated in the 2011 IT&E Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament to force a two-way tie for the lead in the men’s B1 singles division after Wednesday night’s games at the TSL Sports Complex.

Gargallo and Bandoja both played at Court 2 and notched their third win in as many games to share the leaderboard in the men’s B1 singles. Gargallo swept Edwin Montoya, 21-12, 21-12, while Bandoja also needed only two sets to beat Erik Pena, 21-12, 21-18.

Both Pena and Montoya absorbed their third loss in as many games to remain at the bottom of the standings in the eight-player field. Mario Diola and Noli Santos are tied for second with their identical 2-1 slates, while Joseph Santos and Jerry Balarao hold similar 1-2 cards.

Only one of the remaining four matches at Court 2 were completed on Wednesday night. Elma Labuson and Jaja Samonte challenged Alma Ortega and Chie Guevarra in the women’s B2 doubles and won in three sets, 21-10,15-21, 21-11.

Over at Court 1, three matches were decided in two sets, one was stretched to three, and one was forfeited.

In the women’s doubles C, Alma Ortega and Guevarra topped Nona Salas and Melanie Santos, 21-15, 21-11; Wendy Fernandez and Cris Obaldo swept Jane Tupas and Arlene Naguit, 21-15, 21-7; and Kim Boranah and Lee Eun Yee defeated Elna Curate and Rose Lazaro, 21-16, 23-21.

In the two singles games set at Court 1, Joel Ortega slipped past Daniel Choi in three sets, 18-21, 21-14, 21-16, and Balarao was awarded a win by forfeiture over Pena, 21-0, 21-0.

At Court 3, four of the six games scheduled were completed. In the women’s doubles A, Loyda Ito and Cristy Villaflor triumphed over Malou Malasarte, 21-12, 21-17, and Anna Rose Omori and Michelle Caleon thwarted Anna Alvarez and Shirley Kim, 21-14, 21-13.

In the singles division, Panapa swept Mark Puno in the men’s C category, 21-19, 21-16, and Chris Hilario beat Aries Cordero in the men’s B2, 21-11, 21-12.

Meanwhile, the IT&E tournament will be extended for one more week due to the unavailability of new courts. The event is expected to conclude on June 26. The remaining matches will be played from Wednesday to Sunday.
