Random thoughts

Just a few random thoughts as I read the Saipan Tribune for the past few months. First, I would like to ask that Article 12 not be repealed.

I’m not Chamorro and I don’t claim to be, however, I have seen the devastation done to the local community in Hawaii because non-locals were allowed to acquire land. What happened was this, serious investors from several Asian countries acquired huge tracks of land paying upwards of a few million dollars per acre, but after the land was sold, the locals could no longer afford to buy land.

This has happened in Vietnam, Cambodia, Hawaii, Nevada, California, and other places. I don’t want to see it happen in the CNMI, the land should always remain in the hands of the local people, the only changes that should be made are the people whose grandparents are Chamorro or Carolinian and they (the younger generation) are not 100 percent they should be able to own land.

Budget problems, last night while reading up on the budget problems I ran a few numbers and discovered that that CNMI can have a budget surplus of over $7 million within one year if the Senate can muster the intestinal fortitude to make a few minor changes, without austerity, cutbacks, layoffs, and hurting anyone.

What can they do with $7 million? Wind generators to provide low cost electricity to the people of the CNMI. I will be presenting this to members of the Senate in July if they are interested in hearing it…I’m always looking to help especially if it gets me my tax return from over 18 months ago…
