Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School had a successful turnout for its annual health and cultural festival last Saturday where community members gathered and joined in daylong the festivities.

The school wowed guests by offering various presentations in celebration of the important occasion. Students and teachers in their colorful costumes opened the festivities with the traditional parade of cultures and presentation of national flags. Food vendors, games, and exhibits also added to the festival’s attractions this year.

GTC is home to 12 various ethnicities and cultures. The cultural day aims to promote unity and appreciation of each other’s origins and traditions. This year’s theme is “Strengthening school and community partnerships for families.”

Organized by the school’s Parents Teachers Association, Saturday’s event also marked GTC’s annual fundraising day where it aims to generate funds for the students’ immediate needs.

PTA vice president Ralph Mafnas told Saipan Tribune that the association wants to procure new playground equipment for students and provide assistance to the school’s immediate supplies like toiletries and classroom materials.

But because of the present economic situation of families, Mafnas said PTA did not set a goal for this year and will appreciate whatever amount they could raise for the school.

Mafnas described the event as more of a “celebration” and “rewards” to the students and families who continue to support GTC’s goals of providing quality education to students. The occasion, he said, also celebrates the many accomplishments and achievements received by the students throughout the year.

Despite being a very small school with only over 200 enrollees each year, Mafnas claimed that both parental and community involvement are great at GTC.

Mafnas, along with his wife, were among the food vendors at the festival ground where 20 percent of their proceeds will be donated to the school. The event was also highlighted by the annual Binadu Idol Competition and the Dancing with the Binadu contest.
