U.S. Interior assistant secretary for insular areas Tony Babauta will be on Saipan today mainly to take part in the opening of the Department of Public Health’s Hemodialysis Center.

This will be Babauta’s first visit to the CNMI since the release of the final worker regulations but because he will only be here for a few hours, there’s no telling whether he will be able to discuss with CNMI officials the final rule or the Interior’s recommendation to U.S. Congress on the status of long-term foreign workers.

Press secretary Angel Demapan, when asked for comment, said that Gov. Benigno R. Fitial will also be at the hemodialysis center ribbon cutting but he’s not aware of any other meeting between the governor and Babauta.

OIA has been instrumental in the completion of the hemodialysis center, and this is a reason for Babauta taking part in the opening ceremony.

The last time Babauta was here was in July to sign a $2.26 million grant to develop geothermal energy and bring the CNMI’s fading economy back to life.
