San Antonio whips Susupe for solo lead

The young guns of San Antonio/Gene’s Barber were too much for the veteran crew of Susupe/Armatech.
San Antonio clobbered Susupe, 108-66, during the final game of the week in the 2011 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Village Friendship League last Sunday at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Susupe.
San Antonio, which is composed of players seeing action in the MISO high school caging, used its speed and athleticism to dominate MDX, which is bannered by masters cagers and has only two young players. The bigger, but much slower MDX crew managed to keep pace with San Antonio’s fast-paced game only in the first quarter as the former trailed by only seven, 27-20. Then in the third quarter, San Antonio broke away, outgunning MDX, 37-19, to turn a 44-33 halftime advantage to a big 81-52 lead.
San Antonio drained four triples in the third and every player fielded in the game contributed on offense to break MDX’s back.
Jack Aranda top-scored for San Antonio with 23 points, while Jaymark De Guzman added 14, and Pedro Castro and Marvin Ngeskebei chipped in 12 and 10, respectively. Four other San Antonio playes had nine apiece to give the team a 7-1 record for the top spot in Bracket 1.
Jared Ano led MDX (5-3) with his 18 points, while Art Trajano and Bruce Berline made 17 and 15, respectively.
Chalan Kanoa 94, Garapan 88
In the first game, Chalan Kanoa/Fong’s Bakery pulled off a come-from-behind win over Garapan/JHEM’s Restaurant to improve to a 6-2 record and take the solo second spot in Bracket A.
Chalan Kanoa trailed by as much as 12 in the first period, 10-22, and was still behind after the third, 64-66, when Jun Tabora anchored the team’s recovery in the fourth quarter.
Tabora scored 11 of Chalan Kanoa’s 30 markers in the payoff period to power his team to the six-point win. Ezra Caro supported Tabora, making seven in the final canto, including five of the Chalan Kanoa’s last six points, while Lawrence Rollon added six early in the fourth.
Tabora finished with a team-high 25 points, while Rollon and Caro nailed 22 and 19, respectively.
Matt Duenas led Garapan (5-2) on the short end with his 27 markers, while J.R. Ngeskebei logged 19 and Manny Duenas tallied 15. Manny Duenas drained two early triples in the first period for Garapan’s twin digit lead, but Chalan Kanoa recovered in the second half.
San Vicente 75, Kagman 63
In Bracket B match, San Vicente/Saints downed Kagman/Destroyer to advance to the playoff round.
San Vicente now has a 5-2 record for a tie for second place with Chalan Kiya/Loving Hands in Bracket B. Only the Top 4 teams will advance to the next round.
After a lethargic first half, San Vicente came alive in the last 20 minutes of play for the 12-point victory. San Vicente was behind after the opening quarter, 16-17, and trailed by nine at the break, 24-33, after scoring only eight points in the second canto.
Then in the third period, San Vicente got its offensive game going behind the eight points of Patrick Torres and grabbed the lead, 49-48. Luizi Reyes, who was scoreless in the first three quarters, canned three triples in the fourth to complete San Vicente’s come-from-behind win.
