Sixteen teams will be seeing action in the 2011 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Village Friendship League that will open shop this Sunday at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Susupe.
The MDX caging will feature B level players and also those in the 40-and-above age group.
“We decided to host a league for those who can’t play in open division tournaments, such as the UFO league. This league is for recreational players or those who just want to look for weekend activities and stay in shape,” said Bong Malasarte, who co-coordinates the league with Leo Canedo.
“We also chose to name the participating squads after the villages to recognize the villages on Saipan. It will give teams the pride of representing the different villages here,” Malasarte said.
Canedo added teams will be divided into two pools and each group will play in a round-robin format in the regular season and only the Top 4 teams will advance to the crossover playoffs. The playoff round will implement a single-elimination format.
Matches will be played on weekends. Only one game is set every Saturday, while four matches are scheduled every Sunday. The lone Saturday match will start at 3:30pm, while morning games every Sunday are set for 8am and 10am. The afternoon games are scheduled for 2pm and 4pm.
The Top 4 finishers in the league will receive trophies, while organizers will also hand an MVP plum during the awards ceremony.
This Sunday’s opening ceremony will start at 2pm and a final meeting for representatives of participating teams is scheduled at 5:30pm this Friday at the pavilion near the basketball court in Susupe.
League organizers said individuals or companies interested in sponsoring the competition are welcome. They added they are holding games at the Civic Center Basketball Court to jumpstart their plan of improving the facility.
“In the future, we hope we can fix the flooring of the court, improve the goals, and install lights through the help of the members of the business and basketball communities on Saipan,” Malasarte said.
