Rocyl Ritual made crucial steals and baskets to lift Advanced X-Terminators to a 96-92 victory against Shirley’s in the Inaugural Shirley’s Coffee Shop Invitational Basketball League last Monday at the JP Center Basketball Court.

Ritual had two steals, a layup, and a pair of free throws to lead X-Terminators’ come-from-behind victory.

Shirley’s last held the lead at 92-91, on Jersh Angeles’ split free throw, with 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Advanced inbounded the ball, but Angeles’ sneaked in from the back of the receiver and stole the ball.

Shirley’s moved the ball around, wasting several seconds of the clock before Jessie Nicdao’s pass to Angeles at the top of the key was stolen by Ritual. Ritual then sprinted to their frontcourt and nailed a layup that gave X-Terminators the lead, 93-92, with 12 seconds left in the game.

Shirley’s was out of timeouts and fell prey to X-Terminators’ pressured defense, as Dindo Laxa lost the ball to Mike Olaitiman. Angeles then gave a preemptive foul, sending Olaitiman to the free throw line with the latter splitting his charities.

With three seconds left on the clock and Advanced ahead, 94-92, Shirley’s inbounded the ball, but Ritual was there, anew to steal the leather. The long arms of Ritual were enough to deflect the pass intended for Angeles near the midcourt. Ritual then drew a foul from Angeles and the former sealed the win for X-Terminators, making both charities.

Olaitiman led all scorers with 33 points, while Rodel Apostol and Ritual chipped in 23 and 17 markers, respectively.

Fradel Sedillo paced Shirley’s with 21 points, while Angeles and Laxa added 18 apiece.

The outcome of the Shirley’s-Advanced game could have turned into the former’s favor had not been for the host’s poor free throw shooting. Shirley’s went 7-for-21 from the foul line in the fourth period alone against Advanced’s 11-for-17 clip.
