D-9ers showed toughness in close games to pull off twin victories in the 2009 Budweiser Saipan Major League Baseball at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

D-9ers’ most recent win was last Friday, as they slipped past Young Guns, 7-6, behind the heroics of second baseman Ben Mesa.

Mesa made an RBI that tied the game and then scored the winning run at the top of the ninth inning.

Young Guns played defense at the top of the ninth and were up by one, 6-5.

Mesa, who batted third in the ninth inning, started his heroics with a single that drove leadoff batter Pat Camacho home and tied the game at 6-all

With two outs and Chad Atalig at bat, Mesa sprinted to home plate to give D-9ers the lead, 7-6.

D-9ers defense kept the victory after throwing out Young Guns’ first three batters at the bottom of the ninth inning. Tim Mafnas struck out leadoff batter Harry Nakamura and the next two batters flied out.

Mesa finished 4-for-5 at bat and had two RBIs and one run.

D-9ers played the first of their back-to-back games last week against Rock Steady and stunned the defending champion with an 11-10 victory.

Eric Tenorio led the D-9ers’ win over Rock Steady, going 3-for-5 at the plate and scoring three runs and three RBIs. Bob Lizama, Jeff Tenorio, Wally Emul, and E.J. Tenorio had one RBI apiece. John Acosta went 2-for-3 and made three runs.

Jeff Tenorio went only 1-for-5 at the plate, but his single that drove Eric Tenorio home in the seventh inning gave D-9ers their 11th run and the needed cushion to thwart Rock Steady.

D-9ers led 11-8 after seven complete innings before a two-run double from Manny Sablan at the top of the eight inning moved Rock Steady within one, 10-11.

D-9ers failed to score at the bottom of the ninth, boosting Rock Steady’s chances to steal the game.

Ben Sablan led off for Rock Steady at the top of the last inning and was beaten to first on a 6-3 putout play. Jon Mafnas suffered the same fate with second baseman Mesa throwing to Camacho. Giovannie Ayuyu kept Rock Steady’s hopes alive when he singled, but not for long as centerfielder Ben Guerrero flied out to second, preserving D-9ers win.
