The Marianas Walking Association will welcome back members of the Koala Wanderers International Club of German who will be arriving on Saipan today.

The group, headed by Manfred Trettin, will not have much time to get over their jetlag as they will immediately be taking part in the Koala Wanderers IVV Saipan and Tinian Walk at 4pm.

Registration for the 10-kilometer walk will be at Hafadai Beach Hotel in Garapan at 4pm. From there, participants will walk south along the Saipan Beach Pathway toward the bus stop close to the Oleai Bar and Grill.

Aside from the long course, MWA is also designating a 5-km course where the turnaround point is the old World War II Japanese tank in the corner of Quartermaster Road and Beach Road.

Registration for the Saipan phase of the Koala Wanderers IVV Saipan and Tinian Walk is free and participants can also partake of free drinks and fruits.

The Tinian phase will be held two days later on May 21. It will be exclusive to members of Koala Wanderers and MWA and will entail a jaunt around the historical and scenic spots of the island beginning at the old airport.

Trettin and company first visited the island in May 2005 for the World Walking Day organized by the Saipan Walking Association, Inc. The group also visited Saipan the following year take and also took part in the same event.

During their visit in 2006, the group signed an agreement with Saipan Walking Association, the former name of MWA, that in essence called on both walking associations to keep each informed about the other’s activities and help other walking association around the world to promote walking, all in the spirit of international friendship.

For more information about MWA and its future events, contact Mario Espeleta at 322-8876, Hiroko Tajima at 322-8785, or Bea Quitugua at 285-1694.

MWA, formerly SAIWAI, group was incorporated as a non-profit corporation on July 27, 2001, and was established to promote public health through non-competitive walking.
