HAGÅTÑA, Guam—First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business invite students to apply for the 2009 First Hawaiian Bank Guam Business Businesswoman of the Year scholarships for the Fall 2009 Semester.

The program provides student scholarships at three higher education institutions in the Mariana Islands: the University of Guam, Guam Community College and the Northern Marianas College.

Application forms are available from the financial aid offices of all three institutions, at the First Hawaiian Bank branches and the Glimpses of Guam office. Deadline for completed applications is July 31.

The scholarships are intended to “promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers,” and are open to both full-time and part-time students. The scholarships will be awarded based on merit, eligibility, a written essay, and financial need. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Laura-Lynn V. Dacanay, senior vice president and region manager for Guam and the CNMI for First Hawaiian Bank, said, “We are delighted to be able to open the Businesswoman of the Year Scholarship Program to even more students in the Marianas, thanks to the generous support from the business community.”

Maureen N. Maratita, publisher of Glimpses Publications, said, “This scholarship program is designed to be unique in many ways, and also has the support of community organizations such as the Guam Council of Women’s Clubs, the Guam Women’s Club, the Korean Women’s Association on Guam and Soroptimist International of the Marianas.”

Funds for the scholarships were raised through the 2009 Businesswoman of the Year Gala, held at the Hyatt Regency Guam on April 25. The sold-out event was attended by hundreds of supporters of the program. The event raises funds for these scholarships and recognizes women who make a difference in business. The 2009 Businesswoman of the Year Maga’haga award recipient is Lorraine S. Okada, executive manager of Carlsmith Ball LLP and president and owner of Managing Consulting Services. (PR)
