May marks the graduation ceremonies of the students of the Northern Marianas College. Since the suspension of academic programs on Rota & Tinian, only ABE courses have been offered at those campuses.

Sources have confirmed that no Board of Regent member was present at the recent ABE graduation ceremony on Tinian held last May 13. The Regent appointed from Tinian, Janet King, did not attend.

Asked to confirm whether King or other regents were invited, King confirmed that she personally did not receive an invitation nor was she part of the ceremony.

King declined to comment whether this was an act of retaliation because of her recent voting down of the college president’s contract renewal. On May 8, 2009, the Board of Regents met to evaluate the renewal of the president’s contract. King was the lone “no” vote for the renewal of Dr. Carmen Fernandez’s contract for four more years.

King issued an official statement urging not to have the issue “blown out of proportion.” She attributed the incident to “miscommunication.”

King stated, “We will use this experience as a lesson to strengthen communication protocol between myself and college staff.”

“The president and I can and will work together,” she said. (Saipan Tribune)
