Mobil Oil Marianas yesterday mirrored Shell Marianas’ pump price increase of 15 cents a gallon, leaving Saipan motorists with no choice but to pay at least $3.12 a gallon to fill up their tanks.

Shell raised its pump prices on Thursday. Mobil followed suit Friday, a few days after it increased its prices on Tuesday, only to roll it back on Wednesday.

Mobil and Shell Marianas’ self serve regular unleaded gasoline now costs $3.12 a gallon, up from the previous price of $2.97 a gallon since the last round of price changes in February.

Motorists will be able to buy cheaper self serve super unleaded gasoline at Mobil service stations at $3.42 a gallon, compared to Shell’s self serve premium unleaded gasoline priced at $3.44 a gallon.

Mobil and Shell’s diesel is now $3.29 a gallon.

Both Mobil and Shell have not been issuing advance public notices of pump price changes.

Motorists in the CNMI are paying much higher for gasoline than their counterparts on the U.S. mainland. As of May 11, the U.S. average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.240, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
