8 teams join ‘Hot Mommas’ badminton meet
Northern Marianas Badminton Federation joined the rest of the world in celebrating Mother’s Day by hosting a one-day tournament at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium last week.
Dubbed “Hot Mommas” Badminton Doubles Tournament, the event took place two days before Mother’s Day and drew eight teams, which were grouped into two divisions. Five pairs competed in the B division, while the three others participated in the C division.
Marylyn Montano, who with partner Cheng Saturno finished second in last month’s 2009 IT&E Badminton Doubles Tournament, had a different teammate in Lucelle Lampera. The new partnership produced a victory in the B division finals against the duo of Elma Labuson and Ana Rose Omori.
Others tandems that joined the B division competition were NMBF president Shirley Kim and Emily Vargas, Malou Malasarte and Cheng Saturno, and Ingrid Sanchez and Rose Lazaro.
New NMBF member Riza Yutuc had a rousing debut, as she and Lupe Sabino bested two other teams in the C division. Malou Mendoza and Ruby Gozon finished second after outclassing the duo of Nimfa Santos and Merlie Tolentino.
The top finishers in each division received cash and special prizes, while other participants went home with raffle prizes, donated by Kim.
This was the second straight year that NMBF held a tournament in celebration of Mother’s Day.
“This is our way of honoring our members, who still find time to play and enjoy the sport of badminton while fulfilling their responsibilities as mothers. The tournament also aims to promote camaraderie among members,” said Kim, who thanked Hapi Gabriel for organizing the event.
After the IT&E doubles event and the Mother’s Day tournament, NMBF will be holding two more competitions this year.
“We may have one mixed tournament and the traditional team tournament at the end of the year,” Kim said.
The NMBF president added they are also planning to hold clinics.
