New league holds summer youth caging
A new basketball league has been formed in the Unified Basketball Association, Inc. and the group will hold its inaugural event via the 2009 U.B.A. Summer Youth Basketball League next week.
Veteran cager James Lee is the association’s president with Joe Diaz as vice president. Marvin Deocares and Dante Olivos were elected secretary and treasurer, respectively.
“Unified Basketball Association Inc. is a non-profit organization created to help improve the standards of the sport of basketball on our island. With that in mind, the organization’s mission is to create and provide a consistent calendar of leagues and tournaments for all ages and to offer a reasonable entry fee so that our youth, adults, as well as our respectable Masters can enjoy and love the game,” Lee said in an e-mail sent to Saipan Tribune.
Lee added the league will kick off the summer caging on May 15 at the Garapan Basketball Court. Complete schedule will be announced once the rosters and other requirements are finalized.
So far, the league has five teams each entered in three divisions.
Division I, which is for 13 to 15 age group, has Rollers A and B, Sonics and Junior Sonics, and Sixers on its list.
Rollers, Kagman Ayuyu, China Town Lil’ Saints, San Antonio Sixers, and Sonics are entered in Division II, which will have players in the 16 to 17 age group.
Division III, which will cater to players in the 18 to 20 age category, has Rollers, Rock Steady, Kagman Sparks, Project Impact, and Pink Buns.
Organizers are calling on coaches, players, and parents to attend a meeting with league officials on May 9 at the Garapan Basketball Court.
Lee said they will discuss at the meeting the ground rules for the upcoming league. The meeting will also allow coaches, players, as well as parents, to ask questions or even give suggestions and comments about the league.
“This will allow both sides to understand thoroughly the rules and regulations in the league, and also help improve what we, organizers, might have missed,” Lee said.
