Jeon, Lebria named MVPs in private school caging
Mt. Carmel School’s Nicolle Lebria and Grace Christian Academy’s Dae Won Jeon took the highest individual award in the 2009 Coalition of Private Schools on Saipan Basketball League, as they were named most valuable players in a brief awards ceremony Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Lebria, along with fellow CNMI Women’s Nationals teammate Noelle Calvo, led the Lady Knights to an impressive 8-1 record en route to taking this season’s pennant.
In the playoffs, Lebria was still at the forefront of MCS’ offense and scored 10 points in the Lady Knights’ scary 36-32 title win over Saipan International School.
MCS’ victory ended SIS’ three-year reign in the varsity division of the league.
Besides Lebria, four other cagebelles were recognized for their impressive games throughout the season. Making it to the All-Conference Selection were Calvo, SIS’ Annie Camacho, GCA’s Hannah Cabrera, and Marianas Baptist Academy’s Jennifer Sakamoto.
Jeon failed to lift the GCA Eagles to a title win over SIS, but as a consolation of sort, hoisted the top individual award in the league.
Jeon made only 10 points in the Eagles 31-41 title loss to the Geckos, but was a force to reckon with in the regular season, leading his team to a 7-1 slate. GCA took this season’s pennant.
Other individual awardees in the boys division were All-Conference Selection members Richard Park of MBA, William Salazar of Calvary Christian Academy, Arnold Lee of SIS, Kevin De Leon of GCA, and Rodney Salas of MBA.
Medals were awarded to individual awardees, while trophies were given to the Top 3 teams.
SIS coach Rick Linkenhelt joined SIS male players in receiving their championship trophy during the awards ceremony. The champion team is composed of Yi Shang Wang, Miguel Brostrom, Arnold Lee, Cooper Graf, Josh Borja, Hunter Thorpe, Sun Jae Cho, Chris Barry, David Xian, Henry Lee, and Lucas Knecht.
Rommel Calcena called the shots for the MCS Lady Knights, which had Nicolle and Kaylani Lebria, Calvo, Amanda Tudela, Michelle Burger, Jam Salas, Rayanne Camacho, Mai Nakajima, Aila Olarte, Ciara Dela Cruz, Francine Tenorio, Savana Manglona, Pauline Cielo, and Justalyn Camacho in their roster.
