Give Unto Caesar…
Former Senate President Juan S. Demapan explained why municipal governments must be granted their full authority as a democratic institution. The current arrangement is a cowardly manifestation of the lack of trust in elected municipal officials. It further pre-empts the institution of its rightful authority. Either we “Give unto Caesar what’s Caesar’s” or abolish the municipal governments altogether.
Any democratic society is founded on the harmonious establishment of relationships among its governance. Governance is closer to their leaders at the municipal level than with the state government. It is the synergistic working relationship of council members and mayors that encourages proactive governance at the village level. Don’t you think it’s time to grant this level of government what it deserves?
Demapan’s explanation would dissolve the Third Senatorial District of an encroachment in authority that is appropriately the purview of the municipal government. May I reiterate: Give unto Caesar what’s Caesar’s. My gratitude to the former Senate President for his lucid explanation of a simple issue so mired in too much government. Let’s do it right, right here and now. Governance at the municipal level deserves nothing less than the preservation of an institution where our first democratic government was born in the 50s.
